SIR JOHN BENNETT 1814 – 1897

Born 15 Oct 1814 son of John and Elizabeth Sinnock Bennett, bapt St Alphage 10 Nov 1814. (brother to George Weedon Bennett born 1816, Abraham Bennett born 1818 died ………… William Cox Bennett born 1820 Elizabeth Sinnock Bennett born 1819 ) Educated Colfe`s Grammar School Lewisham . After death of his father in 1829 went into business with his mother at Stockwell Street. Married 1843 Agnes dau of John Wilson of Deptford , she died 1889 He moved to 64/65 Cheapside in 1846 and was in business there until 1889. He was knighted in the thanksgiving honours list of 1871 and made Sheriff of London that year. Despite three attempts he was not elected an Alderman of the City. His shop in Cheapside was finally demolished in 1929 and the Gog and Magog clock was bought by Henry Ford and is still in the Dearborn Museum in Michigan He was a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and took the back page of the Great Exhibition catalogue in 1851 which cost £750 and he also took Stand no 1 at the exhibition. At the 1862 Exhibition he bought the front page for 1,000 guineas. .

Charles Dickens bought a hall clock from him in 1863 and writes to him

My Dear Sir, Since my hall clock was sent to your establishment to be cleaned it has gone (as indeed it always has ) perfectly well but has struck the hours with great reluctance, and after enduring internal agonies of a most distressing nature, it has now ceased striking altogether Though a happy release for the clock this is not convenient to the household. If you can send down any confidential person with whom the clock can confer, I think it may have something on its works that it would be glad to make a clean breast of .

Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens.

He retired to Mountfield in Sussex and died at St Leonards on sea on 3 July 1897, aged 81, his obituary notice went into the Times for 6 July 1897. His son and grandson died in New Zealand at the start of the 20th C. His brother George Weedon Bennett, born 1816 , ran the Stockwell shop after Sir John had gone to Cheapside , but died suddenly aged 45 in 1851.
